New York City, NY - June 27, 2024 – Waste Connections of New York, Inc. (“Waste Connections of New York” or the “Company”), a leading provider of solid waste and recycling services in New York City, is proud to announce the addition of two new, fully-electric garbage trucks to its fleet.
The Company introduced two Peterbilt Model 520EV into its operations earlier this month to provide service within New York City’s new Commercial Waste Zones, 12 of which were awarded to Waste Connections of New York and a Citywide zone to provide compactor service as part of Local Law 199 of 2019, which focuses on commercial waste reform. The electric trucks will be deployed to collect recycling in Queens Central, the first zone scheduled to be designated later this year. The Peterbilt 520EV could revolutionize waste collection with the capacity to service up to 1,100 containers on a single charge.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to provide sustainable, efficient, and community-oriented waste and recycling solutions, we are excited to announce the integration of the Peterbilt Model 520EV into our operations,” said Anthony Hosri, District Manager for Waste Connections of New York. “The benefits of this battery-powered garbage truck extend beyond operational efficiency. The introduction of the 520EVsupports our sustainability-related objectives and should significantly reduce noise pollution. Its design and functionality make it an ideal fit for New York City, where commercial collection takes place at night,” said Hosri.
As part of its commitment to sustainable practices, the Company also intends to install solar panels at its Bronx facility. These solar panels will power the charging stations being installed for the Peterbilt520EV, reinforcing its dedication to renewable energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint. Waste Connections of New York has already begun converting its gas-powered fleet of pickup trucks to electric variants, including two FordF-150 Lightning trucks.
