How Trash Becomes Energy
Landfill gas is composed of roughly equal parts methane and carbon dioxide and is produced during the waste decomposition process. Landfill gas, which would otherwise be combusted to control emissions under federal rules, can be converted or recycled into electricity. This is process is called waste-to-energy or WTE. Specifically in this case, we are converting gas-to-energy, GTE. A series of wells, currently including 150 wells drilled to a depth of approximately 150 feet deep into the waste mass, are connected by piping that conveys the landfill gas to the GTE Plant. A vacuum system is used to draw the gas from the landfill, however, before the gas reaches the Plant, it is dried and filtered to remove hydrogen sulfide to produce a cleaner gas for combustion.
The GTE Plant consists of six Caterpillar Generator Sets (engines) housed in a sound insulated building on the landfill’s footprint. The electricity produced feeds the local power grid with the plant having a current capacity of 9 megawatts (MW) with a possibility of generating 25 MW as the landfill and fuel source expands.

Serving our Community
JED takes pride in sponsoring diverse initiatives that contribute to the advancement of educational opportunities in the area: Supporting a local barrel racer in her pursuit of a college scholarship, investing in a local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter to foster the next generation's engagement in agriculture, serving as the largest sponsor of The Education Foundation of Osceola County.
Christmas Promise Bike Build
Our parent company, Waste Connections, started building bikes in 2011 for children in need at Christmas time. At JED Landfill we embrace the Christmas Promise Bike Build that gives us an opportunity to give back to the community where we live and serve.
Growing the tradition
In 2017 JED Landfill employees were able to raise funds for, build and give 100 bicycles to organizations helping children in Kenansville and Holopaw. In 2018, we built and donated 175 bicycles to children in Kenansville, Holopaw and St. Cloud. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.
Sponsor of local educational initiatives
JED has been a proud sponsor of various initiatives across the area for the further development of educational opportunities:
- A local barrel racer as she earns toward her college scholarship
- A local FFA chapter to ensure the next generation is investing in agriculture
- Largest sponsor of The Education Foundation of Osceola County
Environmental Protections
We The network of environmental protection systems at JED Landfill starts with a dual composite liner system that creates a barrier preventing contaminants from impacting the soil and groundwater. Next, a leachate collection system beneath the waste and above the primary liner collects liquids within the waste as well as rain that percolates through the waste. Once collected, the leachate is pumped to a contained storage area for loading and transport to an approved wastewater treatment facility.
Storm water runoff is also collected separately from leachate and contained in sedimentation ponds that allow soil particles to settle out of the water before evaporating or infiltrating the ground. Groundwater monitoring wells, tested semi-annually, are strategically placed around the perimeter of the site to help ensure that landfill operations do not affect groundwater quality.
Methane gas, produced naturally by decomposing waste, is collected under vacuum through a series of extraction wells and piped to the Gas to Energy Facility where it ultimately generates electric power for end users. The environmental protection systems in place meet all state and federal regulations.
Sustainability
JED Landfill, along with our parent company, Waste Connections, supports sustainability efforts across the company and the communities we serve. Solid waste landfills over time generate a greenhouse gas, methane, which can be collected and converted into a valuable source of clean energy. We deploy gas recovery systems, such as the one here at JED, to collect methane that is then used to generate electricity for local households, fuel local industrial plants, power alternative fueled vehicles, or qualify for carbon emission and renewable fuel credits.
Since its opening year, JED Landfill has provided disposal options for Residential and Commercial Municipal Solid Waste, Construction and Demolition Waste, Industrial Wastes, and various Special Wastes.
